The story of Ilan Grapel, the American-Israeli accused of spying on Egypt for the Mossad, is gathering legs.
Alleged Mossad spy Ilan Grapel claimed he was a Muslim in the visa request he submitted to the Egyptian Embassy in Tel Aviv, the Egyptian newspaper al-Ahram reported Wednesday.
Well, if he had said he was a Jew, it wouldn’t have taken this long to arrest him.
The report also said that Grapel tried to gather information on the reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah, signed in Cairo, and on the feeling toward the agreement within the Egyptian public.
Why is that spying? What did he do? Take a public opinion poll?
According to al-Ahram, an interrogation of Grapel revealed that the Mossad asked him to “penetrate” all political parties and organizations, especially the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafist parties, and find out what the situation in Egypt would be like if the Muslim Brotherhood ruled and what impact this would have on Israeli-Egyptian relations and on relations between Iran and Egypt.
Other than ‘penetrating’ that sounds like what’s called ‘political analysis’ in most of the world. And by the way, since when is the Egyptian government so concerned with protecting the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists?
Grapel reportedly sent the Mossad documents and images over the internet from several cafes in Cairo, but did not send anything from his hotel room in order to mislead authorities and to maintain secrecy. He also tried to recruit Egyptians to rise up against the Army, al-Ahram said echoing earlier Egyptian reports.
Okay, if that last sentence is true, it’s serious.
But I don’t believe Grapel was acting for the Mossad. I think he’s just a naive fool who was trying to freelance on his own (if that). And I’m glad that the US is handling this rather than Israel – he’s much more likely to get off with being expelled from Egypt and declared persona non grata.
In the midst of the budding friendship between Egypt and Iran, Egypt has expelled an Iranian diplomat for spying:
Egypt is expelling an Iranian diplomat who was briefly detained and questioned on charges of illegally gathering intelligence for Tehran, security officials said.
Qassem al Husseini, the diplomat, was arrested on Saturday in his Cairo home, after the Egyptian intelligence tracked his movements, Al Jazeera’s Ayman Mohyeldin reported.
Husseini was charged with attempting to set up spy rings in Egypt and other Arab countries.
One puzzle remains:
He was released after a two-hour detention, Haydar Moslehi, Iran’s intelligence minister, said on Sunday, according to Iranian state television’s website. Moslehi also said that Egyptian authorities apologised for the incident – though he did not elaborate.
Since Egypt went ahead with the expulsion and Iran is not explaining, it’s unlikely the whole thing was just one big misunderstanding.
Hope Egypt enjoys their new friends.
A United Nations force in southern Lebanon says it is investigating a blast reportedly caused by the detonation of an Israeli device spying on Hezbollah’s private telecommunications network.
The militant Hezbollah group said Friday it discovered what it said was an Israeli device in the southern village of Majdel Silim. Both the group and the Lebanese army said the device was apparently detonated remotely by the Israelis.
they say it as if spying on people that are breaking international law and are trying to kill you is a bad thing
Hezbollah spy, immigration fraud perpetrator, and FBI/CIA infiltrator Nada Nadim Prouty a/k/a Nada Nadim Al-Aouar DeLaDurantaye Valley Prouty is not only not behind bars for life for selling out America to Hezbollah because Federal Judge Avern Cohn, a Marxist, gave her only a fine of a few hundred dollars as a “sentence” for her treason (the limp Bush administration sought only six months prison time for her spying). Even more disgusting, though, is that, tonight, CBS News’ “60 Minutes” is whitewashing her as a “patriot.”

Unbelievable that she is getting away with it within our very own covert operations within the secret service agencies. It is like as if they want her back already and are creating a public relations piece to lubricate the mechanism of government to employ all the Jihadis. Her immediate case I don’t care too much about because she’s merely one real bad egg. What is threatening here is the media is setting up arguments for legitimizing terrorists so they can run a police state controlled by those same terrorists. am I over the top here? you bet… but to me this is like an Islamic Clockwork Orange and this feminist trophy gal is just another gang member for Mohammed.
her brother-in-law, Talal Chahine, was Hezbollah’s third biggest donor after Iran and Syria, and her own sister helped him do it, cooking the books for him. …but 60 Minutes would make you think otherwise:
Drewsie. I used to know one from Lebanon that was my near best friend before he slept with my girlfriend at the time. The Drewsie are supposedly loyal to whatever government they are in, but from my experience of knowing a Drewsie in America that this is not so. My Lebonese Druze friend once slept with an Egyptian girl and when she realized his background she trashed his place with red paint. The Druze can only marry their own. Everyone in the middle east apparently understands this and the Druze sleep with whores to satiate their appetites till they can find a Druze woman to marry. Looks like there will be less work for whores now that we freed up this female. The government in Lebanon is run by Jumblatt the Druse… another Hezbollah proxy.
