Ethiopia has accused Egypt of supporting rebel groups in an attempt to destabilize the country. This may be another reason for the growing tension between the two countries.

Egypt has been engaged in a prolonged negotiation for the last decade with seven other African countries regarding the status of a water-sharing agreement signed by Great Britain as the colonial power in 1929 that provides Egypt with 55.8 billion cubic meters of the 84 billion cubic meters of the Nile waters, despite the fact that 85% of these waters originate from Ethiopia.
