The Crisis of Jewish Leftist Islamism (by Sultan Knish)(h/t Israel Jews and Judaism) There is a civil war among liberals, particularly Jewish liberals who are being edged out by the radical Anti-Jewish left… Beinart exonerates leftist Zionists and Anti-Zionists, telling the former that they were abandoned by the awful Jewish state and telling the latter that hating Israel is the truest expression of their liberal and Jewish values… Now the left is conducting its long march through Jewish institutions to make supporting Israel seem un-Jewish and transform bashing Israel into a Jewish value (MORE)

(Tablet)(Israel Jews and Judaism) Beinart quotes former Israeli foreign minister Shlomo Ben-Ami telling Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman that “If I were a Palestinian, I would have rejected Camp David as well.” Yet Ben-Ami said in the same interview that Yasser Arafat “was morally, psychologically, physically incapable of accepting the moral legitimacy of a Jewish state, regardless of its borders or whatever.” This goes unquoted. I suspect that’s because Beinart found it in The Israel Lobby by political scientists John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, which also quotes the first part of Ben-Ami’s statement but not the second.(MORE)

(Tablet)(h/t Israel Jews and Judaism) Beinart writes that the Strip “remains a place of brutal suffering.”, but New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof says, in a July 2010 column: “Visiting Gaza persuaded me, to my surprise, that Israel is correct when it denies that there is any full-fledged humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The tunnels have so undermined the Israeli blockade that shops are filled and daily life is considerably easier than when I last visited here two years.”(MORE)

(One State, Two States by Steven Bayme)(h/t Israel Jews Judaism) Beinart complains that AJC and other leading Jewish organizations invest far greater efforts attacking Palestinian one-statism than Christian or Jewish one-statism…. we disagree profoundly with the one-state solution of the Christian Right, we find Palestinian one-statism a greater danger precisely because it is articulated by people with whom Israel is expected to make peace(MORE)

Stupid Liberal problem… they think they need a state for Jew killers. There already are plenty. Hey… these are excerpts… I don’t agree with them. These are liberal ideologies that I am exploring here. I didn’t say they were sustainable. – Noah

The Tragedy of John Mearsheimer

September 29, 2011

(American Power) Gilad Atzmon, whose book Mearsheimer blurbed, is a despicable and ugly Hitler apologist and Holocaust denier. What’s also particularly disturbing is that Professor Stephen Walt joined the debate to explicitly defend Mearsheimer against the allegations of anti-Semitism.
Related: The title at Goldberg’s entry is not subtle: “John Mearsheimer Endorses a Hitler Apologist and Holocaust Revisionist.” David Bernstein, at Volokh, “A Challenge to John Mearsheimer“, Bernstein links to Pejman Yousefzadeh, and here’s another from Pejman that’s vital: “John Mearsheimer Further Beclowns Self. Film at Eleven.”, And here’s this from David Rothkopf, “Mearsheimer picks a winner: Finally, a revealing book jacket blurb“, Rothkopf’s reference is the the post by Mearsheimer at Stephen Walt’s blog at Foreign Policy, “Mearsheimer responds to Goldberg’s latest smear.”, this Harry’s Place entry is probably the most precise examination of Gilad Atzmon’s anti-Semitism: “Mearsheimer and Walt defend antisemite who thinks Hitler will be proved right.”

(h/t Carl) Illinois Republican Senator Charles Percy

The death on Saturday of former U.S. Senator Charles Percy at 91 was noted today in a laudatory obituary in the New York Times. Percy had a distinguished career in business and served three terms in the Senate from Illinois as a Republican. The Times quoted a scholar from the liberal Brookings Institution lamenting the fact that members of the GOP today are nothing like Percy. But that ought to be a cause for celebration. He is best remembered today as the exemplar of a type of Republican that is now extinct: a liberal establishmentarian who was an opponent of the state of Israel.
Percy blamed supporters of Israel for his defeat in 1984. This is a theme that was picked up by Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer in their ludicrous book The Israel Lobby in which the duo paints Percy as a martyr to the power of the all-powerful conspiracy for Zion. It is true that many in the pro-Israel community embraced the candidacy of Paul Simon, his Democratic challenger. However, the Times, which omitted any mention of Percy’s record as one of the most vociferous opponents of Israel in the Senate, was closer to the mark than Walt and Mearsheimer when the paper said of his defeat that the senator had become “old goods” to Illinois voters when they rejected him despite having a triumphant Ronald Reagan at the top of the GOP ticket. By that time, having a Rockefeller Republican senator with higher ratings from liberal groups than conservative ones wasn’t something that excited voters from either party.
Though the Times’ cheers Percy’s pose of bipartisanship, his was a Republicanism that fit the mode of the party’s old-line establishment that was dying even when he reached the Senate in 1966. It was a party that stood for nothing but protection of corporate interests and had long become complicit in the corruption of the liberal welfare state. It combined that concept of backing for the Democratic program minus five or ten percent with a snooty elitism that disparaged faith and the rights of taxpayers as well as having little sympathy for Jews or Israel. Fortunately for the country, that Republican Party and the moneyed establishment that Percy embodied, is now as dead as he is. Read the whole thing.

Leon Panetta Admits the U.S. At War With Iran?

July 15, 2011

The US barely mentions Syria. Obama denies we are at war with Libya–whom we are bombing. But the US is at war with Iran–whom we are not bombing: The United States is engaged in a deadly but seldom mentioned proxy war with Iran. In a rare act of candor, two senior Obama administration defense officials have addressed the open secret of Iran’s active support for insurgent groups fighting U.S. troops overseas. New Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta says this war is in response to the increasing violence of Iran’s Shiite militia groups and their military support for Iraqi extremists. More via Daled Amos

It’s Time for Nick Clegg to Scrape this Foul Tonge – Spinning Jenny the Lib Dem Peer Slurs Israel Yet Again

November 14, 2010

Daphne Anson
13 November ’10
Jenny Tonge – who sits in the House of Lords on the Lib Dem benches as Baroness Tonge, having been given a life peerage in 2005 after several years as an MP – is a veteran detester and demoniser of the world’s only Jewish State, and as a result has earned the epithet “Jihad Jenny”. In 2004 the then Lib Dem leader, Charles Kennedy, sacked her as a party spokesperson after she had refused to apologise for saying of Palestinian suicide bombers: “If I had to live in that situation – and I say that advisedly – I might just consider becoming one myself.”
In 2006 Tonge made headlines when she announced: “The pro-Israeli lobby has got its grips on the western world, its financial grips. I think they’ve probably got a grip on our party.” Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell – himself no great friend of Israel – called her remarks “unacceptable” and possessing “clear antisemitic connotations”.
An all-party group of members of the House of Lords led by former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey noted that her comments “evoked a classic anti-Jewish conspiracy theory”. She retorted that Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer’s article “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy” that appeared in the 23 March 2006 issue of The London Review of Books – whose “as-a-Jew” editor Mary-Kay Wilmers is on record, incidentally, as describing herself as “unambiguously hostile to Israel” – bore out her contention that the “‘Israel lobby’ had a disproportionate voice in Anglo-American foreign policy”.

The Problem With J Street

October 17, 2010

good Jews come to influence at various times in American history. It just isn’t right now. I think this analysis overextends itself:

The US supports Israel because most American Christians support Israel, and not because of the small number of Jewish voters in the US. That’s another reason why Walt and Mearsheimer are wrong too.

If AIPAC and related groups call politicians anti-Israel, the tens of millions of non-Jewish voters who connect Israel’s security with American values and interests will believe them. (A recent poll found that 53% of voters were more likely to vote for a candidate who was ‘pro-Israel’.) AIPAC is powerful because it is the accredited watchdog on an issue the non-Jewish public cares about; if the dog barks, something is wrong.

Media gives Anti-Semites cookies and milk

July 30, 2010

Everyone knows that the media is reeling. For instance, New York Times staffers recently took a 5 percent pay cut after a hundred of their colleagues were laid off. And yet, compared to their colleagues at the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, both of which have been gutted after sliding into bankruptcy, journalists at the Times are clearly the lucky ones. None of the big media companies has figured out how to make their Internet presence into a profit center that can sustain operations, even as they turn their hallowed brand-names over to opinion bloggers who can generate copy at a tiny fraction of the cost of traditional reporting. The Israel, or rather anti-Israel, market is one of the most attractive niche markets in this trade because it taps into a passionate audience that is interested in news and can generate immediate and measurable results—page views, hits, and comments. Even on his best days, Stephen Walt can’t hold a candle to premier sports, shopping, or pornography websites traffic-wise. But he can tap into the prurient passions of a niche market.

In his review of The Israel Lobby, Walter Russell Mead explained how Jew-baiting has historically functioned: “Jews are in a double bind: refrain from responding with outrage and the charge becomes accepted as a fact, express utter loathing at the charge and give anti-Semites the opportunity to pose as the victims of a slander campaign by venomous Jews.” For the purposes of driving Internet traffic, it is helpful if Jews respond, but not necessary, as anyone who has waded through the cesspool knows.
