Reducing Gun Violence By Legalizing Drugs

December 21, 2012

In the wake of the Newtown massacre, there has, understandably, been a new wave of advocacy of policy proposals aimed at preventing future incidents of the same kind. However, gun violence in schools is already extremely rare, with the average child far more at risk of dying in a car accident or backyard pool accident than in school. And we are unlikely to reduce the already low incidence of mass shootings by gun control or other policy changes. Fortunately, as Yale law professor Dan Kahan explains at the Cultural Cognition Project blog, we can achieve a significant reduction in violence by legalizing drugs:

[W]hile the empirical evidence on the relationship between gun control and homicide is (at this time at least) utterly inconclusive, there certainly are policies out there that we have very solid evidence to believe would reduce gun-related homicides very substantially.
The one at the top of the list, in my view, is to legalize recreational drugs such as marijuana and cocaine.
The theory behind this policy prescription is that illegal markets breed competition-driven violence among suppliers by offering the prospect of monopoly profits and by denying them lawful means for enforcing commercial obligations.
The evidence is ample. In addition to empirical studies of drug-law enforcement and crime rates, it includes the marked increase in homicide rates that attended alcohol prohibition and the subsequent, dramatic deline of it after repeal of the 18th Amendment.

Kahan makes a number of other good points in his post, and cites lots of additional evidence. As they say, read the whole thing.
As an extra bonus, this approach to reducing gun violence doesn’t threaten anyone’s civil liberties or Second Amendment rights. It would actually increase protection for civil liberties by cutting back on the many abuses associated with the War on Drugs, such as bogus asset forfeitures and paramilitary paramilitary police raids that often kill or injure innocent people, and the erosion of the Fourth Amendment. And, unlike stepped-up gun control or “zero tolerance” policies of the sort we got after Columbine, it would actually save the government a great deal of money by reducing expenditures on enforcement efforts and prisons. Drug legalization would also help promote family values in poor communities, which is both good in itself and might help reduce violence still further.
As President Obama said in Newtown, “we can do better than this” when it comes to curbing gun violence. Cutting back on the War on Drugs is a great place to start. Polls show that marijuana legalization, at least, is rapidly gaining in popularity. That might give the president and other politicians the chance to effect change we can believe in in this field.

The first of the 26 victims of the massacre at Newtown, Connecticut, was brought to rest on Sunday.
Noah Posner, aged 6, was the only Jewish victim.
Rabbi Shaul Praver of Edath Israel told his congregation that the massacre is “proof that there is much evil in the world.”
On Saturday, Rabbi Praver had told the assembled worshipers: “Don’t think that life is somewhere over the rainbow. What you’ve got right now, with your family, your friends, your house: This might be as good as life is ever going to be.”
The congregation also bade farewell to Ben Weiler, another boy murdered in the massacre. Although he was not Jewish, his parents used to volunteer at Edath Israel.
Jewish law prescibes that burial take place as soon as possible after death out of respect for the deceased, created in “the image of G-d.”.

The father of Newtown Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza is Peter Lanza who is a VP and Tax Director at GE Financial. The father of Aurora Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes is Robert Holmes, the lead scientist for the credit score company FICO. Both men were to testify before the US Senate in the ongoing LIBOR scandal. The London Interbank Offered Rate, known as Libor, is the average interest rate at which banks can borrow from each other. 16 international banks have been implicated in this ongoing scandal, accused of rigging contracts worth trillions of dollars. HSBC has already been fined $1.9 billion and three of their low level traders arrested.

What I had read that there was a person shot in Colorado who’s father was to testify about LIBOR. Now in NY about a month ago two children were killed by there nanny which was very bizzare circumstance. There father worked for CNBC and just wrote a article about the LIBOR lawsuit in Brooklyn Federal Court.

  • Nothing surprise me anymore. The devil is here to destroy.

  • The Aurora shooter was also supposedly involved in a form of government psychological testing program in upstate New York. This was according to a guest on Coast to Coast last month. I caught the conversation while driving and didn’t get details or the guests name. He was retired from government service and explained what part he took in the experiments.

  • I am reading, but cannot pass along with sort of credible sources documented. Could very well be true. What are sources (persons) of and elements of research?

  • Fox News Blames Shooting on ‘Online Activities,’ ‘Gaming’

    December 16, 2012

(gawker.com)Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and analyst Keith Ablow got together on the network today to chat about some of the factors in today’s tragic shooting in Connecticut. “You mentioned earlier how people lose themselves in online activities, gaming and what have you,” Kelly remarks. “Reality TV is no friend of preventing such things,” Ablow responds. “Facebook is no friend of preventing such things.” What fantastic, nuanced analysis.(I didn’t shoot anyone)

Syrian Rebels Responsible for Houla Massacre

    June 11, 2012

(EYE)(NRO) It was, in the words of U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan, the “tipping point” in the Syria conflict: a savage massacre of over 90 people, predominantly women and children, for which the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad was immediately blamed by virtually the entirety of the Western media. Within days of the first reports of the Houla massacre, the U.S., France, Great Britain, Germany, and several other Western countries announced that they were expelling Syria’s ambassadors in protest.
But according to a new report in Germany’s leading daily, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the Houla massacre was in fact committed by anti-Assad Sunni militants, and the bulk of the victims were member of the Alawi and Shia minorities, which have been largely supportive of Assad. For its account of the massacre, the report cites opponents of Assad, who, however, declined to have their names appear in print out of fear of reprisals from armed opposition groups.
According to the article’s sources, the massacre occurred after rebel forces attacked three army-controlled roadblocks outside of Houla. The roadblocks had been set up to protect nearby Alawi majority villages from attacks by Sunni militias. The rebel attacks provoked a call for reinforcements by the besieged army units. Syrian army and rebel forces are reported to have engaged in battle for some 90 minutes, during which time “dozens of soldiers and rebels” were killed.
“According to eyewitness accounts,” the FAZ report continues,

the massacre occurred during this time. Those killed were almost exclusively from families belonging to Houla’s Alawi and Shia minorities. Over 90% of Houla’s population are Sunnis. Several dozen members of a family were slaughtered, which had converted from Sunni to Shia Islam. Members of the Shomaliya, an Alawi family, were also killed, as was the family of a Sunni member of the Syrian parliament who is regarded as a collaborator. Immediately following the massacre, the perpetrators are supposed to have filmed their victims and then presented them as Sunni victims in videos posted on the internet.

The FAZ report echoes eyewitness accounts collected from refugees from the Houla region by members of the Monastery of St. James in Qara, Syria. According to monastery sources cited by the Dutch Middle East expert Martin Janssen, armed rebels murdered “entire Alawi families” in the village of Taldo in the Houla region.
Already at the beginning of April, Mother Agnès-Mariam de la Croix of the St. James Monastery warned of rebel atrocities’ being repackaged in both Arab and Western media accounts as regime atrocities. She cited the case of a massacre in the Khalidiya neighborhood in Homs. According to an account published in French on the monastery’s website, rebels gathered Christian and Alawi hostages in a building in Khalidiya and blew up the building with dynamite. They then attributed the crime to the regular Syrian army. “Even though this act has been attributed to regular army forces . . . , the evidence and testimony are irrefutable: It was an operation undertaken by armed groups affiliated with the opposition,” Mother Agnès-Mariam wrote.

On October 2 1938 Arabs Massacred 21 Jews in Tiberias, The British Reacted With Appeasement

    October 3, 2011
    Three Victims of the Massacre
    -Deborah,Rebecca and Haya Mizrah
The Sanhedrin, the famous Jewish court, fled from Jerusalem during the Great Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire, and after several moves eventually settled in Tiberias.
Many scholars believe that the Mishna and the Jerusalem Talmud was compiled in by Rabbi Judah haNasi in Tiberius who according to the Midrash came into the world on the same day that Rabbi Akiva died a martyr’s death.
(YidWithLid) On October 2 1938, an organized groups of Arab attackers in Tiberius massacred 21 Jews. Three of the victims were women and ten were kids younger than twelve. The victims were stabbed shot and burned. The [New York Times, Oct. 4, 1938] described the brutal rampage: …The attack apparently was well organized, since the Arab gang, before descending on Tiberias, cut all telephone communications… Three weeks later (Oct. 27th) Tiberian Arabs murdered the Jewish mayor, Isaac Zaki Alhadif.(MORE PAIN)
Rabbi Judah HaNasi also said, “One who is ignorant of the Torah should not eat meat.” This is because one who is ignorant is on the same level as animals. The great rabbi was so against cruelty that he recommended going without meat for those who had not read Jewish texts. Obviously trying to go vegan didn’t do much for Adolf Hitler, but I doubt those Arabs could of cared less
