20-year-old Palestinian woman thrown into well and left to die in the name of "family honor"

May 20, 2011

SURIF, West Bank (AP) – A 20-year-old Palestinian woman who was thrown into a well and left to die in the name of “family honor” has not become just another statistic in one of the Middle East’s most shameful practices.
The killing of Aya Baradiya – by an uncle who didn’t like a potential suitor – sparked such outrage that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas scrapped laws this week that guaranteed sentences of six months or less for such killings.
And in another sign of changing attitudes, the young college student is being mourned as a “martyr” and her grieving parents are being embraced, not shunned, by neighbors.
So-called “honor killings” are committed regularly in traditional Arab societies that enforce strict separation between the sexes and view an unmarried woman’s unsupervised contact with a man, even by telephone, as a stain on the family’s reputation. There were nine such killings in the West Bank last year, and Jordan reports about 20 every year.

Dalit set afire after son elopes with Muslim girl

NAMAKKAL: A 61-year-old dalit man was burnt to death in Periyapatti village of Namakkal district after his son eloped with a Muslim girl of the same village.
Nallayan’s son Sekhar (27) was in love with Gulzar (21) and couple allegedly eloped recently. At 3pm on Monday, when Nallayan was working in a shop in Periyapatti, Gulzar’s father Shahjahan went there and called out to him. An argument ensued, followed by a scuffle during which Shahjahan allegedly poured petrol over Nallayan. He then lit his cigarette lighter, setting fire to Nallayan who suffered serious burn injuries. Although he was admitted to the Namakkal government hospital, Nallayan died later, police said.
Nallayan’s daughter Shanthi said Shahjahan and his relatives had threatened her family members soon after Sekar eloped with Gulzar. Nallayan had pleaded with Shahjahan to give him two days to search for his son

The Volokh Conspiracy » Blog Archive » $150,000 Settlement for Black Public School Students Harassed by Other Black Students for “Acting White”

December 31, 2009

some black kids sued other black kids for racially bullying them for acting white. the court decided that the claim was valid because of the crime… and the identity didn’t matter… therefor an honor killing is wrong because of violence towards a Muslim and not because of the identity of the culprit being Muslim. interesting note when prosecuting Muslims for acting out their religion. legally their status as Muslims is irrelevant.

That’s the report from South Carolina Lawyers Weekly:

The two students each received $50,000, and two family members who filed the suits on their behalf received $25,000 apiece ….

Title VI prohibits allowing a racially hostile educational environment in schools and programs receiving federal financial assistance and provides for a private cause of action for violations….

Both students were African-American, and so was most of the elementary school’s student body, according to [the students’ lawyer, Lawrence C.] Kobrovsky….

[The younger student] claimed she suffered emotional trauma because she was subjected to racial and sexual slurs at … elementary school … Despite complaints, school administrative staff and district officials allowed the abuse to “escalate to the point where [she] was physically threatened, assaulted and battered,” the suit alleged.

“You have a culture where to act like you want to do well in school is considered acting white. And that is part of why we’re saying that it was racial, even though the students were all of the same race because they weren’t acting how the others thought they should be acting as members of that race,” Kobrovsky said….

Hans says:

Under this reasoning, all honor killings are religion-based crimes, because the victims are killed for not acting Muslim enough.

Of course, whether that is so or not, honor killings target girls, not boys, which is all that the new federal hate crimes law requires (it does not require hate as a motive, only that the perpetrator act partly or wholly based on the victim’s sex, religion, race, sexual orientation, or transgender status). They are clearly sex-based hate crimes, more obviously so than many rapes.

Yet no honor killings are being prosecuted by the Justice Department as hate crimes, despite falling within its literal language — even as white defendants acquitted of hate crimes against illegal aliens get reprosecuted in federal court after being found not guilty in state court, suggesting they might actually be innocent of the crime.

By the way, the Eighth Circuit found an employer liable for allowing one African-American to racially harass another.

Honor Killings

Amina and Sarah, the Said sisters  – raped and murdered by their Muslim father – still at large.

this society has many victims. it isn’t just the men who are creating a violence. the first part of killing the victimization cycle is to realize this. keep in mind how quiet women’s groups are and then you realize the reason they are afraid to speak isn’t just because they are afraid to confront religion, but rather because to speak out they would have to confront other women who are part of this and believe in their culture of submission. it is hard to fight an enemy when you can’t find villains. you can point your blame on the man who committed the end violent act, but you lose if you don’t look at the cultural cycle that got him to that point. if you demonize men then you fail to look at all the women who brainwashed him to get to that point. and while it is true that if these men were not killing for Islam, they might be killing for something else… but there is a bigger problem and that is if these men reject their religion then they embrace a secular culture that is very hostile to men. if you leave us guys no place to escape to then unfortunately the domestic abuse people have practically sealed the deal. sadly secular culture has not grown past the Gloria Steinem idea that everyone is the same. the feminists don’t understand that they must create roles that allow difference in gender. if men trying to escape cultural intolerance are confronted with a huge paradox that doesn’t work for them then they will just become another Darth Vadar. my mother wrote a play that went around the country about “Domestic Violence”, It was called, “Rule of Thumb” It went around the country and played for organizations. In the mid 90s I was invited with my family to see them do a version of the play at the Philip Morris building. The people at the event struck me as on edge. one of the women involved in the event was an NYPD officer who was very involved in these issues. I remember thinking out of place at the event and my own mother had written the play. my mother became very good friends with the police officer who spent her career in crises situations dealing with hostage situations involving domestic abuse cases. apparently my mother during a six month period had the police officer disappear and my mother said she felt guilty as if she had done something wrong and she wasn’t sure what it was. apparently it wasn’t that the police officer thought my mother had done anything wrong… on the contrary the police officer had shot herself to death in her very own domestic squabble. the people who are creating the alternatives need better guidelines then 70s feminism.
