The French Government has been very angry at the the United States because of the NSA Revelations. Perhaps a bit too angry. The French Newspaper, Le Monde has reported that the General Directorate for External Security does the same kind of data collection as the American National Security Agency’s PRISM but does so without clear legal authority. The system is run with “complete discretion, at the margins of legality and outside all serious control,” the newspaper said, describing it as “a-legal.” Which means unlike the US program there is no court approval. The French Database is available to the various police and security agencies of France, the newspaper reported, and the data is stored for an indeterminate period. The main interest of the agency, the paper said, is to trace who is talking to whom, when and from where and for how long, rather than in listening in to random conversations. Apparently just like the PRISM also record data from large American networks like Google and Facebook according to Le Monde.
Connections inside France and between France and other countries are all monitored, Le Monde reports. The paper alleges the data is being stored on three basement floors of the DGSE building in Paris. The secret service is the French equivalent of Britain’s MI6.
The operation is designed, say experts, to uncover terrorist cells. But the scale of it means that “anyone can be spied on, any time”, Le Monde says.
According to the paper, French officials privately claim the that there was a difference between data collection in the name of security while French officials have been collecting data about American citizens they do not spy on the American Embassy in France (American officials are skeptical of those reassurances, and have pointed out that France has an aggressive and amply financed espionage system of its own).
What makes this revelation particularly hypocritical is just yesterday the French Interior Minister Manuel Valls was the guest of honor at the US Embassy’s 4th of July party, and rewarded the hospitality by making a speech bashing his host’s for the NSA spying program, all the while his country was running a similar program.
Israeli filmmaker beaten unconscious by Arab ‘youths’ shortly after his film won festival’s top prizeMarch 29, 2013
Israeli filmmaker Yaniv Horowitz was beaten unconscious by Arab ‘youths’ outside a French film festival shortly after his movie, Rock the Casbah, won first prize at the festival.
(Carl)He is reported to have lost consciousness and has been subsequently treated. Horowitz is said to have returned immediately to the festival after treatment. Authorities are estimating that the attack was racially motivated.
Horowitz, who represents Israel, was attacked immediately after the screening of the film by a group of Arab youths. The director lost consciousness and was treated at the festival. After recovering from the blows he received, he returned to the festival area in “good condition”.
After the violent incident, Horowitz’s film won the Special Prize of the Jury for Best Picture. Israeli singer and musician Assaf Amdursky also received an award for a movie he wrote music.
The film “Rock the Casbah”, starring Yon Tumarkin, follows the story of young soldiers in the first intifada in Gaza. The soliders are located on the roof of a Palestinian family whose son is involved in the murder of one of their battalion.
But hey – they’re just ‘youths.’ It doesn’t mean anything, does it?

Sadly you really can not legislate against free expression and the right to anonymity. You will see this shortly. Any attempt to protect citizens from hate will be used to silence legitimate criticism against Islam
(French court orders Twitter to reveal details of users posting anti-Semitism | JTA – Jewish & Israel News) — A French tribunal has ordered Twitter to divulge details about French users who posted anti-Semitic messages.
Thursday’s ruling by a judge of Paris’ Grand Instance Court came in response to a lawsuit by the Union of French Jewish Students, which sought to limit the impunity with which Twitter users may disseminate anti-Semitic incitement.
“It is a major precedent and breakthrough in the attempt to balance privacy online with the need to combat hate speech,” Sacha Reingewirtz, vice president of the Union of French Jewish Students, told JTA.
The court, he added, imposed a pending fine of $1,300 against Twitter for every day in which it fails to deliver whatever details it possesses on users who are suspected of disseminating hate speech on Twitter. The ruling, Reingewirtz said, applies only to people who did so in France.
Additionally, the ruling by the Paris court’s 17th chamber ordered Twitter to set up a system in which French users may flag anti-Semitic content, which would later be reviewed by Twitter before removal and possible referral to the authorities. The ruling was given at the court where a few dozen activists assembled alongside journalists.
“Social networks were created as essentially democratic tools that are also being used by people who oppose democratic principles,” Nuno Wahnon Martins, director of European Affairs at B’nai B’rith International, told JTA. “Like any democracy, the social networks also need to defend themselves and the first step is to deny those who spread hate speech anonymity as something to hide behind.”
Like usual the Jewish community is looking to government to resolve something that can not be resolved except through a Jewish state. Hatred is part of free expression. Groups like the @JIDF are a little more shrewd in that they do not turn to legislation and look to merely enforce already existing self imposed social network codes.
Many of the Islamist terrorists shot their way into the In Amenas compound on Thursday using the AK104 model of Kalashnikov, which was typically used by Libyan rebels in the war against Muammar Gaddafi. They brought F5 rockets that also surfaced in the Libyan war, said the security source. The Islamists wore the same type of outfits provided to Libyan National Transitional Council rebels by Qatar – yellow flak jackets with brown patches, known as “chocolate chip” camouflage. The garments are copies of ones worn by Americans in the Gulf war. The terrorists also employed 60mm gun-mortars used by France and Libyan rebels. Other non-Libyan arms used in the Algerian terror attack included German and Chinese-made Kalashnikovs, classic rocket-propelled grenades and Russian offensive and defensive grenades. The Algerian army had two missile-carrying Mi24 Super-Hind helicopters, armoured cars, and Russian-made T90 tanks. For the assault on the gas facility itself, special forces used incapacitating gas, infrared cameras, heat-seeking cameras and “optical devices to be able to see under doors and through walls”.
