A Little Bit.ly Sharia? Tech Business Builds on Libya Domain « Creeping Sharia

In other words, as Gawker titled their story: Muammar Qaddafi More or Less Owns Your Links. Astute reporting below from a blog entitled Workbench:

Bit.ly Builds Business on Libya Domain

The URL shortening service Bit.ly just secured $2 million in financing from investors including O’Reilly’s AlphaTech Ventures. Though URL shorteners have been around for years, Bit.ly believes there’s money in offering Twitter-friendly short links along with web analytics to track how the links are used. The company reports that its links were clicked 20 million times last month.

So far, the news coverage I’ve read about Bit.ly has neglected an unusual aspect of the startup: It’s one of the only prominent online ventures using a domain name in the .LY namespace, which is controlled by Libya.

There are two issues that arise from this relationship.

First, of course, is the appearance of an American company doing business with Libya, a country that the U.S. considered a state sponsor of terror from 1979 through 2006. On Dec. 21, 1988, Libyan intelligence agents planted a bomb on Pan Am Flight 103 that blew up 31,000 feet over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 259 people onboard.

Bit.ly’s only doing a trivial amount of business with Libya — the domains sell for $75 per year from the registrar Libyan Spider Network — but its use of .LY domain is helping to popularize and legitimize the top-level domain for general use on the Internet. It’s only a matter of time before a reporter decides to ask the families of Lockerbie victims what they think of the arrangement. I can’t imagine that story going well for the company.

Even without that PR hit, there’s another potential concern for Bit.ly and any other venture that builds its business on an .LY domain. These domains are governed by Libyan law, as it states on the Libyan Spider Network site:

Any .LY domain names may be registered, except domains containing obscene and indecent names/phrases, including words of a sexual nature; furthermore domain names may not contain words/phrases or abbreviations insulting religion or politics, or be related to gambling and lottery industry or be contrary to Libyan law or Islamic morality.

So the names must conform to Islamic morality, and it’s possible that the use of the domains could fall under the same rules. What are the odds that some of those 20 million clicks on a Bit.ly-shortened URL end up at sites that would be considered blasphemous or otherwise offensive in an Islamic nation? Bit.ly conveniently provides search pages for such topics as Islam, sharia, gambling and sex, any of which contain links that could spark another controversy.

Bit.ly’s building a business atop a domain that could be taken away at any time, and the company’s only recourse would be to seek redress in the Libyan court system. Take a look at Section 11 of the regulations for .LY owners:

The Arabic language is the language of interpretation, correspondence and the construction of the Regulation or anything related to it. … In case of conflict between the Arabic and the English versions the Arabic version shall prevail.

I hope Bit.ly’s attorneys are brushing up on their Arabic. ~end

More from Domain Name Wire:

Is it wise to run a web service using a questionable country code domain?

I’ve warned about the dangers of country code top level domains. Rogers Cadenhead made some interesting observations about Bit.ly, a URL shortening service that just scored $2M in funding.

You see, .ly is the country code for Libya, which has a not-so-great history with the United States. He also points out some of the rules attached to country code domains. I’ve written before about .AE for United Arab Emirates that restricts uses within Muslim law. There’s no poker.ae, for example. The same thing goes for .ly. This presents a problem since the Bit.ly service let’s you forward to just about any web site with any topic. Technically the content isn’t hosted on a .ly domain, but the danger is there that Libya would lay the hammer on this.

No serious business should use a country code domain name other than a major, unrestricted domain without special content rules.

Update: Twitter’s selection of bit.ly is demise of popular URL shortening service tr.im:

tr.im is now in the process of discontinuing service, effective immediately.

Statistics can no longer be considered reliable, or reliably available going forward. However, all tr.im links will continue to redirect, and will do so until at least December 31, 2009.

Your tweets with tr.im URLs in them will not be affected.

We regret that it came to this, but all of our efforts to avoid it failed. No business we approached wanted to purchase tr.im for even a minor amount.

There is no way for us to monetize URL shortening — users won’t pay for it — and we just can’t justify further development since Twitter has all but annointed bit.ly the market winner. There is simply no point for us to continue operating tr.im, and pay for its upkeep.

We apologize for the disruption and inconvenience this may cause you.

(there’s money in tr.im somewhere – how about an auction?)

Another update: Feedback from tr.im users convinced them to continue the service.

Let’s all get facts before we post and stir up people to knee jerk reactionary type of action.

First and foremost – we would appreciate you asking Bit.ly directly before you go out and post on your site about Bit.ly and our supposed conspiracy theorized type of Libyan connection.

Here below are the most common Q&A concerning Bit.ly and Libya. Please feel free to engage us in dialog via our direct support channel which is – support@bit.ly – We are way to busy with actual work, and keeping the billions of bit.ly urls running live than to engage in a discussion via this or any blog, but we feel since a concerned member of our community took the time to e-mail us, that we would respond here directly. Please direct any further questions to the address above.

Thank you.

–Why did you pick the name bit.ly?

We picked the name bitly because it’s short and it is evocative of small bits, loosely coupled, a theme at betaworks. Bit.ly is a shorter url than bitly.com, which we also use, and echoes the name of several micro-blogging services like present.ly, song.ly and near.ly.

To purchase the domain, we paid $75 to an online registrar accredited by ICANN, the international nonprofit that governs internet domains and naming, which is headquartered in Marina del Rey, California, here in the US of A.

–Are you confident the site will be safe?

ICANN signed an accountability framework with Libya Telecom and Technology in March 2007, which sets out the telephone company’s (LTT’s) obligations as a registrar for the .ly domain and provides an internationally-accepted mechanism for dispute resolution.

ICANN sets a standard for responsibility and reliability, and we have confidence in their framework.

We’ve also got a tremendous confidence in our engineering team, which has built a redundant, secure, highly-scaleable site. Every single bit.ly short url also exists as a bitly.com page.

–Do you have any issues doing business in Libya?

We don’t do business in Libya, but it’s worth noting that on May 31, 2006 the United States reopened the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, a step the State Department described as marking “a new era in U.S.-Libya relations.”

creeping Says:

Rex Dixon,

If you are from bit.ly your response if more than disappointing.

First and foremost, the story came from sites including Gawker, Workbench, and Domain Name Wire – none of which you chose to leave a comment on.

In none of those stories nor here did anyone even come close to suggesting any type of “conspiracy” between bit.ly and Libya. To even suggest so is the purest of propaganda and obfuscation.

Further, no one ever suggested that your site was not secure either. But again, that is not the issue. Nor is the issue doing business in Libya, as you and other commenters suggested.

We posted the information in April 2009 and your are now responding, proving that you are clearly NOT too busy with your billions of Libyan-domain-named short URL’s to formulate a comment that does nothing to address the issues brought up by the various sources.

While you may not want your users and the general public to know that the .ly domain name is a Libyan controlled domain and disputes are potentially subject to Islamic morality law – which is completely opposed to the U.S. Constitution – other sites and blogs chose to share that information.

Users can make up their own mind based on the totality of information and potential risk.

If bitly were to unequivocally announce it will support and defend any bitly user who in the future might face legal action from a knee-jerk reaction from Libya as a result of a bitly url containing content that is “contrary to Libyan law or Islamic morality” then skeptics might have more confidence (that would apply to any business using the Libyan domain).

Just like citizens have the option to vote/note vote for politicians who make policy decisions they don’t agree with (such as removing Libya from state sponsors of terror list), they also have the option of choosing which technology services they use.

Google Blocking Negative Search Recommendations On Islam – Why?

January 6, 2010

Religion always causes a stir when it is debated, and Google seems to know it. Google is not taking a fair approach to the way that it handles searches for different religions.

When you search for the major religions of the world, the monotheistic faiths for example, Google serves up suggestions for the search “Christianity is” such as, “a lie,” or false.” Try it on a a number of faiths, and then Islam.

Notice any difference?

Google is systematically blocking, it seems, all search suggestions for Islam. Why? To remove the chance of an adherent of the faith from being offended by a perhaps severe search suggestion? Why not treat all search terms equally?

Given the complete lack of suggestions, not just terms that could be perceived as negative, it seems that Google is covering its, well, behind.

Don’t want to do all the leg work? Check the image after the jump.

Google Blocking Negative Search Recommendations On Islam Why?

From the Hadith

In addition to being a rabbi, I have also studied the Koran extensively, and I can assure tyou that there are many more passages there that refer to the Jews as “Allah’s chosen” and “people of the book”. In the same vein, there are Moslem Zionists and philo-Semites like the Islamic scholar Sheikh Abdul Hadi Palazzi (see link below) who see the establishment of a Jewish homeland as fulfillment of Allah’s word (17:104, The Night Journey). Unfortunately, there are many passages in the Torah and the Talmud which could also be construed in a literal sense as racist or xenophobic, but I believe it is important to resist these fundamentalist interpretations–from any side– that merely inspire hatred and fear. There is enough of that in the world already without religion adding more. For that reason, I have accepted this particular invitation, even though it is my general policy to curtail my participation in Facebook groups; and because I feel that it is so vital to reestablish the natural kinship and affinity we as Jews share with our Moslem brothers and sisters. If you want to defriend me for that “sin”, I am more than happy for you to do so.

Salaam/Shalom,

A change in my views has happened over the past 5 or 6 years. I am a Muslim Zionist. I firmly believe the Jewish people should be allowed to live in the holy land. I abhor terrorism and any needless loss of life. However, unless we do something to bring Muslims and Jews closer together, cultivating understanding and love between them, there will never be security for the Jewish people. Noah, if you wish to interpret the Qur’an in ways that inspire fanatics to increase their hostilities towards the Jewish people… I’m afraid I cannot stop you… But know that I’m doing what I can to destroy their ideology, promoting spirituality instead, which should in turn help to create a safer, more peaceful world for everyone…

Blessings and peace,

Paul

there is no equivalences to the level of hate in Islam. even the interpretation “we will gather you together in a mingled crowd” in Israel alludes to a way to slaughter them behind those trees.

“Jews and Israel must face the facts that the Koran and the Sunna (the actions and words of Mohammed) are filled with invectives against the Jews. At first the words were complimentary, but when the Jews of Medina rejected Mohammed as a prophet they were all enslaved, exiled, murdered and robbed — all acts of jihad. These were not historical acts, but perfect examples of Islamic action towards Jews — models prescribed for Muslims to follow up to the present time. To illustrate the severity of this predicament, statistically speaking, in the Koran of Medina 10.6% of the text is devoted to Jew hatred, whereas, only 6.8% of Mein Kampf is devoted to Jew hatred.”

here are some verses for you to look over. they do not include the versus that my Hindu friends have put together.

http://www.thejidf.org/2009/11/does-quran-contain-dozens-of-verses.html

“Qur’an (2:191-193) – “And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]…and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah.” There is a good case to be made that the textual context of this particular passage is defensive war, even if the historical context was not. However, there are also two worrisome pieces to these verse. The first is that the killing of others is authorized in the event of “persecution” (a qualification that is ambiguous at best). The second is that fighting may persist until “religion is for Allah.” The example set by Muhammad is not reassuring.”

Noah David Simon December 5 at 11:21pm

Moshe Yehuda Bernstein 玉梦舍 December 5 at 11:29pm Reply
Perhaps you did not register when I told you that I have studied the Koran and am familiar with all of those verses, but I am not a literalist and believe in developmentalism when it comes to religions. Fortunately, I know other Moslems like Paul who are redefining the Koran by rejecting the literal interpretation of those verses which, as you correctly state, must be framed in historical contexts. I also had the good fortune to live 3 years in Morocco, a country that has a long history of tolerance– certainly better than the record set by many Christian nations. In that respect, while you are onm the prowl for those to hate, you might want to read Prof James Carroll’s Constantine’s Sword to see the Christian record on scriptural intolerance towards Jews. You may rightly end up with only Hindu (and Buddhist) friends, which is fine with me– except, of course, that according to Torah law they are idolators whom you are not allowed to befriend! At any rate, Noah, though I am as much against terrorism and Islamic radicalism as you, I am more inclined to accept Paul’s invitation for a vision of Moslem- Jewish unity than I am yours to a continuation of Moslem-Jewish hatred, so thanks but no thanks!!

Hi Noah,

How can you fight against something you appear to be incredibly ignorant of? Islam has a long history of debate, between different scholars and factions, who in some cases have taken very different standpoints. I respectfully suggest, if you wish to continue what you are doing, you partake in some thorough research first; looking at the whole picture and not just the bits that fit your prejudices.

Kind regards,

Paul

Noah David Simon December 6 at 3:04pm
I’ve seen a lot of pulling rank here and attempts to contradict without any examples. I’ve given my examples and you have not given me one religious historical institutional narrative or system to back up anything you say. you claim prejudice, but I’ve given examples of where my ideas come from and you return with ad hominum conjecture. personal attacks just further a very obvious orchestrated hate of Jews.

Minarets Are Our Bayonets: The Swiss Vote To Ban Them – Hudson New York

December 3, 2009

the Swiss political establishment can be expected to try to find a way to overturn the referendum, possibly by taking a page from the EU playbook, and forcing another referendum until Swiss voters produce the “correct” answer.

In any case, critics say the decision to ban minarets will have little practical effect in the sense that it does not prohibit the construction of new mosques. Nor does it require that existing minarets be torn down. Moreover, the new measure does nothing to improve the integration of Muslims into Swiss society, which lies at the heart of the problem.

But supporters say that is not the point. They say the SVP’s main achievement has really been to draw the public’s attention to the limits of European multiculturalism, especially amid a growing perception that Islam poses a threat to traditional Swiss identity. Indeed, Swiss voters across the political spectrum seem to agree that Muslim immigrants need to be much better assimilated and socially integrated.

In the final analysis, however, the anti-minaret referendum may end up having its greatest impact outside of Switzerland, as conservatives in other European countries will now be emboldened to more forcefully question previously sacrosanct policies on Muslim immigration. If this happens, the Swiss vote will turn out to be the first salvo in a long overdue debate about the role of Islam in Europe.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan once implied that the construction of mosques and minarets is part of a strategy for the Islamization of Europe. The pro-Islamist Erdogan said: “The minarets are our bayonets, the domes our helmets, the mosques our barracks and the faithful our army.” …and now here is the West’s response. We take him very seriously.

But we have to acknowledge that kill the unbelievers; is an awkward verse – Jihad Watch

November 29, 2009

From left, Sheikh Jamal Rahman, Pastor Don Mackenzie, and Rabbi Ted Falcon read from their respective holy books during their presentation at the Second Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tenn., in October.
if this verse only applies to situations in which Muslims are in grave danger, such that Islam itself may not survive, they would argue — and do argue — that that is precisely the situation that prevails today. Accordingly, the interpretation that is supposed to mollify and reassure Westerners actually only opens the door for more jihad.

” At least Sheik Jamal Rahman is honest enough to acknowledge that there is a problem with the “Verse of the Sword” — Koran 9:5 — although he retails the same old tired glib dismissal that we have heard a thousand times before, that it is “taken out of context.”

67% of US Hate Crimes are Against Jews

November 26, 2009

Our friend Debbie Schlussel is on the ball, yet again, with exclusive analysis on hate crimes in America:

Well, the FBI official hate crimes statistics are out for 2008. And like every year since the 9/11 Muslim terrorist attacks on America, the vast majority of religious hate crime victims on U.S. soil are America’s Jews. While the Pentagon and US Army did overtime pandering to Muslims like Nidal Malik Hasan, the real hatred was against one set of his mortal enemies…….more than a few of those anti-Semitic hate crime perpetrators are, in fact, Muslims….Missing from the FBI stats are the stats on the perpetrators of these crimes, which I’d bet would be very telling.

Please read her full breakdown here, and follow her on Twitter, here

EXCLUSIVE Analysis: Sorry, Islamophobia Pimps – 67% of US Hate Crimes Against Jews

By Debbie Schlussel

FBIhatecrimes2008-1

fbihatecrimes2008-2

That’s right. A whopping 66.69%–or just over 2/3rds–of America’s religion-based hate crime incidents are committed against Jews. But, hey, there’s no anti-Semitism. I’m just imagining it. The real condition afflicting America is Islamophobia, right? Let’s ignore that only 6.91% of hate crime incidents were against Muslims, with Catholics very close behind comprising 4.94% of hate crime incident victims. Sadly, some Catholic leaders look the other way on anti-Semitism (more on that below).

Another fact that is very inconvenient to Muslim propaganda is the fact that hate crimes against Jews and Catholics are growing, but hate crimes against Muslims, not. In 2007, there were 969 reported hate crime incidents against Jews in America. In 2008, it’s 1,013. In 2007, there were 61 anti-Catholic incidents. In 2008, there were 75. For Muslims, in 2007 there were 115 reported incidents against them. In 2008, it’s 105. And all of this is despite the fact that unlike other groups, Islamic groups work overtime to get alleged Islamic victims to report hate crimes.

fbihatecrimes-1a

fbihatecrimes2007-2

Yup, America’s hate is carried out not against the fellow co-religionists of the 9/11 hijackers–you know, the Muslims. They’re carried out against the most hated targets of the Muslims: the “evil Zionists.” And–guess what?–more than a few of those anti-Semitic hate crime perpetrators are, in fact, Muslims. Missing from the FBI stats are the stats on the perpetrators of these crimes, which I’d bet would be very telling.

Groups like CAIR, ADC, ISNA, MAS, and MPAC–the alphabet soup of Muslim and Muslim-dominated Arab groups–love to tout “Islamophobia” as a vast and wide-spread “bigotry” in America. But it ain’t so. The numbers simply don’t back it up.

Incidentally, while I lament that hate crimes against Catholics are slightly up, I have to laugh at Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, who was quoted in USA Today upset over this. I made him aware that Emily M. Zanotti, a Catholic working for his Catholic friend Richard Thompson at the Catholic Thomas More Law Center, spent all day long on the payroll blogging in support and praise of Muslim Holocaust-denying anti-Semitic death, rape, and torture threats against me and my family (including my Holocaust survivor grandmother). He looked the other way. Ms. Zanotti is now employed by the Sam Adams Alliance, which is aware of her anti-Semitism and praise for violence and torture . . . and doesn’t care. Michelle Malkin (also Catholic) was made aware of this and continues to help Zanotti and Sam Adams Alliance, anyway.

Stuff like this is why anti-Semitic hate crimes are up. It’s not just Muslims and others who are perpetrating it. It’s phonies in positions of influence who are looking the other way and giving it tacit approval.

Fort Hood: The Saudi Camel in the Room – Hudson New York

November 26, 2009

Today, ISNA is privileged by the Obama administration; its president, Ingrid Mattson, appeared at the Obama inauguration, and was invited to the White House iftar, or Ramadan fast-breaking meal. She was accompanied to the iftar by Imam Yahya Hendy, the Islamic chaplain at Georgetown University. Hendy, it turns out, knew Nidal Hasan when the latter served at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where Hendy also officiates as a chaplain.

“We should be glad that the authorities have moved to shut down the financial dealings of the Iranian clerical dictatorship in the U.S. , as represented by the Alavi Foundation. And we should be relieved that groups like HLF and the other terror supporters have been curbed. But until the real nature of ISNA, MSA, and ICNA is exposed, with their leaders fully investigated, and, where appropriate, charged and tried, Americans will remain disarmed in the face of the radical Islam – on our own soil.”

Senate Committee called on the IRS to collect financial information on 24 Islamist groups operating in the U.S.:

Al-Haramain Foundation

Alavi Foundation

Benevolence International Foundation

Global Relief Foundation

Help the Needy

Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development

Human Appeal International

Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America

International Islamic Relief Organization or Internal Relief Organization

Islamic African Relief Society and/or Islamic American Relief Agency

Islamic Assembly of North America

Islamic Association for Palestine

Islamic Circle of North America

Islamic Foundation of America

Islamic Society of North America

Kind Hearts

Muslim Arab Youth Association

Muslim Student Association

Muslim World League

Rabita Trust

SAAR Foundation and all members and related entities

Solidarity International and/or Solidarity USA

United Association for Studies and Research

World Assembly of Muslim Youth

Most of these organizations are obscure for ordinary, non-Muslim Americans even today. But with the exception of the Iran-directed Alavi Foundation, which was the object of an assets seizure proceeding this month, and leaving aside the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Muslim American Society (MAS), and a few other absent players, the list provides a map of the “Wahhabi lobby” of radical Muslim proponents in American. These organizations are financed by, and in some cases act as direct agencies of, powerful institutions in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, in tandem with their allies in the Muslim Brotherhood.
